Wissahickon Trails Four Mills Barn Headquarters Renovation

The Four Mills Barn is an historic building, designed by Horace Trumbauer dating back to 1891. Originally built as a horse barn, the building now serves as the Wissahickon Trails Headquarters and primary indoor programming space. This building is subject to flooding from the nearby Wissahickon Creek and the project’s goal was to renovate the building to maximize their programming and office needs while allowing for easy clean up after the next inevitable flood event. The project involved moving all public spaces to the first floor and the offices to the second - expanding their headquarters from 4,300 SF to 6,400 SF. In addition to other FEMA-compliant wet-floodproofing techniques, all items that could be damaged by floodwaters were raised above the flood plain.
